If you haven’t seen the official posts, Adobe has been working to make Flash more index-able by search engines. Google has recently rolled out better code for Flash, e.g. you’re now more likely to see useful snippets on Flash pages in Google’s search results.

I’m a fan of this change, and I’m a fan of Adobe in general. They get a lot of credit in my book for opening up the specifications for PostScript, Adobe’s font standards, and their Acrobat/PDF format. Very few companies have been able to open up their specs and still compete successfully against powerful opponents. I respect Adobe for that — not to mention providing one of the first widely-known “plug-in” mechanisms (in Photoshop). The idea of a plugin or extension has greatly affected how people view software from Firefox to WordPress. I’m glad that this most recent change by Adobe will make it easier for search engines to index content in Flash files.

Obviously the Human Genome Project is the most important project in Biology
and will continue for many years, specially due to the recent development of
Bioinformatics. Thus more and more countries are taking part in it. U N E S C O did
play a major pioneering role in catalyzing activities, when the project was started
and was under serious criticism, by supporting in Valencia 1988 both economically
and morally the first meeting for International Cooperation for the Human Genome
initiative and as a result by convening a meeting in Paris and another in Moscow in
collaboration with the then simultaneously created (1988) H U G O . This led the
creation of the Scientific Coordinating Committee (SCC) in 1989.
The two main reasons which led to the interest of U N E S C O in the Human
Genome and to the creation of the U N E S C O Scientific Coordinating Programme
are:1) The task of sharing new insights into the mechanisms of human heredity.
2) Ensuring that adequate thought is given to the wise application of the
scientific knowledge obtained in this field.
The S C C concern has been directed mostly to the interaction of leading
scientists with scientists of the developing countries. This has been carried out by
a number of activities including workshops and especially South-North encounters
in Brazil, China, India and Mexico by the initiation of a network via a short term
fellowship program in collaboration with Third World Academy of Sciences
(TWAS). It should be pointed out that with very limited funds the S C C Committee
has accomplished a great deal, especially since it has attracted the interest and
cooperation of other entities.
The fundamental purpose of U N E S C O , as inscribed in its Constitution is that of
advancing through “the educational and scientific and cultural relations of the
peoples of the world, the objectives of international peace and of the common
welfare of mankind “. In this view, the scientist-all of us–have a duty to ensure that
science is placed in the service of the well-being of humanity.
In this regard I believe that to hear and address the public, is a civic duty of
Scientists. In his recent best-seller, “The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a
Candle in the Dark”, Carl Sagan said: “We’ve arranged a global civilization in
which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. W e
have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and
technology. This is a prescription for disaster”.
Society today requires a scientifically and technologically literate population and
the Human G e n o m e Project is prominent. W e must follow Carl Sagan’s advice and
recognize that the concept of the civic scientist is not a one-way proposition. While
it is necessary to increase public understanding of science, it is equally necessary
for scientists to increase their understanding of the needs of the public.

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that can develop decades after exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral that was once widely used due to its fire resistant and insulating properties, but is no longer mined, milled or manufactured in Australia because of the health risks. All uses in new products are now banned in Australia and no asbestos products may be imported. Strict precautions also govern the removal and disposal of asbestos and asbestos-containing materials.

Mesothelioma usually starts in the outer membrane of the lungs (pleura) but can also occur in the membrane lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). Uncommonly, the heart or reproductive organs may be affected.

The treatment for mesothelioma depends on whether it is only in one place or has spread. Currently there is no cure for mesothelioma unless it can be removed by an operation. Unfortunately, when mesothelioma is diagnosed, it has usually already spread beyond the point where it could be removed by an operation. Treatment aims to prolong life and keep the person as comfortable as possible.

Symptoms of mesothelioma – lungs

The lungs are wrapped in a thin membrane called the visceral pleura. The chest wall is similarly lined (parietal pleura). These two membranes touch and slide across each other while we breathe, lubricated by a slick of fluid.

Mesothelioma usually develops in only one lung. The tumour tends to grow across the lung until the entire organ is encased. Sometimes cancer cells migrate to lymph nodes and other areas of the body (such as the unaffected lung) via the lymphatic system. Mesothelioma causes the pleura to make more fluid than necessary, which presses on the lung (pleural effusion).

Symptoms include:

Breathlessness

Dry cough

Pain.

Symptoms of mesothelioma – peritoneum

About 10 per cent of mesothelioma cases involve the peritoneum. The peritoneum is a membrane that forms the lining of the abdominal and the pelvic cavities. Swallowed asbestos fibres can move through the stomach wall and cause mesothelioma to develop in the peritoneum.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include:

Painful abdomen

Swollen abdomen

High temperature

Nausea and vomiting

Bowel problems

Urinary problems.

Symptoms in the later stages

Symptoms in the later stages of the disease include:

Sudden and unexplained weight loss

Spitting up sputum

Spitting up blood

Swallowing problems
